They say the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas, but some of the brightest bravest stars of Texas are in D.C. right now trying like hell to stop the antidemocratic voter laws penned and pushed by Republicans. Democrats from Texas are holding the line against a full press authoritarian flex from Republicans, whom are determined to retain their “white power” forever. President Biden responded by delivering a speech from Philadelphia. Speeches are fine, however, neutralizing the filibuster is required and long overdue.
The antidemocratic Republican assault on voting rights led Major League Baseball to take action by moving it’s All Star Game from Georgia to Colorado. The first MLB All Star Game was in 1933, held at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. America was in the midst of a depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt offered white America a “New Deal” although some thought of it as more of a “raw deal” for Black Americans by comparison. Strides for white people in America are matched by more strides for white people, it’s like equality is suppose to “trickle down” to everyone else.
While people cheered for the All Stars of Major League Baseball under a Mile High City sky, there too were cheers for the all stars of the Texas Democratic Party, whom are fighting for democracy. But, more importantly there must be federal action to protect voting rights, cheers alone won’t do anything. The filibuster must go – it’s the foul, rotten stench still emanating from slavery, it can’t simply be covered up, as it permeates the nostrils of even the staunchest of the “nose blind.” So, step up to the plate for voting rights with Hank Aaron in mind, don’t just read words from a speech, take action. The People determine elections, not loyalists or lies.
“Didn’t come up here to read. Came up here to hit.” Hank Aaron
