The first sentence of the US Constitution, is called the preamble, and it reads as follows:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

A portion of Barbara Jordan’s historic and fiercely patriotic statement at the Nixon impeachment hearings:

“We heard the beginning of the preamble of the US Constitution, “We the People,” it’s a very eloquent beginning, but when that document was completed on the 17th of September in 1787, I was not included in that, “We the People” I felt somehow for many years that George Washington and Alexander Hamilton just left me out by mistake. But, through process of amendment, interpretation, and court decision, I have finally been included in, “We the People.” Today I am an inquisitor.” Barbara Jordan
