General Ulysses S. Grant, served as the nation’s 18th President. General Grant defeated the Confederacy, which galvanized the end of slavery. The last American President to own slaves, Grant owned a slave, William Jones, whom he later granted freedom. Hiram Ulysses Grant, born April 27, 1822, family and William, referred to Grant as, Hug. However, Robert E. Lee, called Grant, Master, because Grant owned Lee on the battlefield.
