Harriet Tubman, Brigadier General of the Maryland National Guard

Harriet Tubman is posthumously made a Brigadier General of the Maryland National Guard, by Governor Wes Moore

At incredible risk to her own life, Harriet Tubman was a conductor of the Underground Railroad, leading enslaved human beings to freedom.

She not only made it possible for hundreds of enslaved Black people to be free, Harriet Tubman was an Army nurse and led Black troops during the Combahee River Raid in 1863, making her the first woman in American history to lead a military operation.

When there is a woman finally featured on US currency, it should be icon Harriet Tubman…an American leader, freedom seeker, provider and protector.

“I was the conductor of the Underground Railroad for eight years, and I can say what most conductors can’t say – I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.” Harriet Tubman
