Delivering the Democratic response to the State of the Union is a challenging assignment, especially when following the longest State of the Union delivered by a President thus far. Trump trudged through painfully constructed sentences, uncomfortably conflating the termination of investigations with achieving peace. It was a vapid, lumbering speech, comprised of arrogance and fabrication.
Stacey Abrams met the challenge by delivering an extraordinary speech in which she was relatable, conveying honesty, warmth and wisdom. She spoke for all people, advancing the fight for voting rights, access to health care and economic equality. Abrams was the first Black woman to deliver the Democratic response to the State of the Union – she aced it.
The Democratic response, which spoke to equality, reflecting the diversity of America, was in stark contrast to the alabaster paste of privilege, represented by the Republican Party. The Democratic vision of America, represented one of liberty and prosperity for all people, of all colors, and all backgrounds. Abrams reflected to all Americans that self worth out weighs net worth, by reminding us that we are all worthy.
